with the threat of the rebellion becoming greater every day, the government - hand in hand with DOSE, as always - has decided to take an even greater precaution.
so they released their latest and greatest creation.
the mutts were simple creatures, based off (and in some cases, fused with) dogs, cats, birds, and other standard animals. but, of course, they were all altered, in the way DOSE scientists were so skilled at. this batch featured normal modifications - strength, speed, a killer instinct - and a new idea. the idea that if the creature was in constant pain, they would be utterly loyal to their masters. in exchange for the work, they would get a brief moment of relief. that would be all.
and it worked. with their sick, twisted new idea in place, the scientists did whatever they could to ensure absolute obedience. their methods were by no means civil. they defied every animal rights law ever made. they used serums that caused their skin to constantly peel and flake, applied little mechanisms that would spontaneously electrocute, prick, and otherwise hurt them, infecting them with disease, feeding them poisons and letting them go to the brink of death before saving them with the antidote.
they taught the mutts that in order to be pain-free, they had to kill. they taught them so well that the mutts turned on each other and everything near them in a hope for a break from agony. so the scientists locked up their creations and set them loose in the woods where they knew the rebels were. they theorized that the group was still unorganized, lacking true leadership.
little did they know, the rebels weren't so unorganized any more. they had set up a camp. begun training their troops and planning battle strategies. their strength grew with every passing hour.
but so did their losses. the released mutts - or at least, the ones that didn't get killed by each other - sought out the camp, killing those who wandered too far until many feared leaving the safety of numbers. not that that would save them, should the intelligence-lacking mutts ever come across the camp.
now it's a matter of time before the mutts discover the rebel base and wreak havoc there. already they've killed a good number of scouts and wanderers, in addition to the occasional wandering utopian. panic is rising on both sides, with the government and the scientists simply sitting back to watch their latest experiment unfold.
